Digital Twins for Theatre
What is a Digital Twin?
A digital twin is a digital copy of a real world place or object – in our case, that’s a 3D CAD model of a venue or set design of a show.
At Preevue, we specialise in building Digital Twins from either our own LiDAR laser scan surveys or architectural drawings.
The process of building a Digital Twin from a LiDAR laser scan involves manually remodelling the venue piece-by-piece, with the team of artists at Preevue finding the balance between making a highly-detailed and photorealistic file with ensuring it is optimised to run in all industry-standard CAD packages.
Why is a Digital Twin Useful?
Having a digital twin on-file allows the Creative and Production teams to complete a large amount of tasks with a virtual model that they’d traditionally complete in-person.
This includes site visits, programming lighting and video, and checking sightlines. All of these can be done years in advance of a production opening, saving time and money.
These CAD Digital Twins are at the core of everything we do; they are the foundation of our VR Visualizations, our view-from-seat solution Seat Preevue, our production visualization work and our Sightline Analysis tool.
Our Digital Twins are standard 3D CAD models that can be opened in an array of industry-standard software including AutoCAD, Vectorworks, 3DS Max, and Sketchup.
Our files are also compatible with lighting visualisation software packages including Capture, wysiwyg, and ETC’s Augment3d.
