What is a Digital Twin?

A digital twin is a digital recreation of an existing real life space. For film and TV studios, this is an architecturally accurate, photorealistic 3D CAD model that can be used for previz, techviz and virtual scouting.

With a Digital Twin on file, your studio has an edge on competitors by being able to provide game-engine ready files for a production’s previz studio, Art Department, and Production Design team.

 Digital Twins for Studios - FAQs

  • The first step in the process is an onsite LiDAR laser scan survey to gather data. Next, the in-house team of artists at Preevue work to build a clean, optimised 3D model based on the millimetre-accurate LiDAR data and the thousands of reference photos we take onsite during the scan.

  • The Digital Twins we produce and supply are industry-standard 3D models that are both game engine and Virtual Production ready. Whilst they can be used for production quality VFX and previz, they are fundamentally CAD files that can be opened and used within all industry-standard CAD packages.

  • A Digital Twin enables productions to be operating previz and techviz within a full 3D environment that captures all of the unique elements of your space. This greatly speeds up many parts of the production process and minimises the time needed onsite.

    Many productions fully previz in 3D; by providing Digital Twins of your stages and locations, those productions are able to accurately previz within an accurate 3D digital replica instead of a generic box to match the ground plan footprint.

  • For a production to find the most value possible with a Digital Twin, the file itself must be shared with them. This presents a rights management dilemma. At Preevue, we’ve developed an in-house system to forensically watermark ownership of our Digital Twins to ensure traceability with sharing of data.
